The situation presents a conundrum for rapid studies of the role of climate change in this event, as we can't yet put an end date on it. ... One comment points out that the record high was set back in 2017. Another suggest people will do better than crops.

I believe (IIRC) this started around 2015 when the (relatively) new ownership stated explicitly that their goal was to use slashdot to promote a societal good (of their choice), rather than the goal of keeping it popular.
