I did a lot of research on cat shields (since I installed two of them on Champrius recently). All of them have slits / louvres / some kind of airflow through the shield. So while I don't think there's any danger to the aluminum sheet (melting point is 1200F or somesuch), there's probably some engineering reason to make sure there is still airflow around the cat / muffler / hot stuff.
Anyhoo, it might be helpful to look at different cat shields to get an idea:

Most of them seem to have around 10%-ish of the area devoted to airflow.
