I did go with a dark color when I had new shingles put on my house, because it's the best looking when paired with a variety of exterior colors.

When it came time to re-roof our home, white shingles were off the table via a city ordnance. White was considered to be "Cheap looking", thus was not allowed. We have no Home Owners Association in our area but the City acts as one. In vacationing in Bermuda a few years ago, pretty much all the local roofs were white as that was the style. Just make white fashionable.
