The 2023 Ioniq 6 EV will have finally caught up with the 1935 Tatra T77A. We only had to wait about 90 years for a mainstream automaker to match that... The average new car just recently began to match the 1921 Rumpler Tropfenwagen on Cd value, ~0.28, only a century later.
If big block V8 musclecars of the early 1970s had that level of slipperiness, 35+ mpg highway would have been a reality back then during the first fuel crisis. But "no one would buy it", the executives said, as consumers demanded fuel economy and complained about the ugly, underpowered cars of the Malaise era that followed that still got teens regarding highway MPGs, and then bought cheap Hondas and Toyotas instead because the Big 3 set the bar so low...
Planned obsolescence is the sacred cow that is largely responsible for destroying our planet. Industries that use it as a guiding design principle in their products don't deserve to exist, IMO.
