Some people do not know how to use A/C correctly. It must be on recirc and not on full cold. You want it to cycle on and off at the maximum temperature you can handle. Usually the compressor is only drawing engine power less than 50% of the time then. When it turns on it should only run for 30 seconds or so.

If you just drive around with it on full cold setting with fresh air vent, then the compressor is running and sucking engine power 100% of the time and it will significantly reduce your mpg.
