I've been playing around with avr assembler too, but I may hold those efforts for a more deliberate offering, a-la MPGuino PRO or something.
It's work, but its crazy how much smaller things are with assembler and I think I can get a lot more goodies on even the same 168 chip by losing the bootloader and the C++ toolchain/version dependencies. You might have to actually wire up your LCD "right" to use it though
But I'm not in any rush. The guino fills the gap very nicely as-is, once you get it working, IMHO.
