I would like to say one more thing about the hybrid ticking time bomb. While buying old cars is not the norm in the USA, in other countries it is. In Central and South America used cars have held their value just like how it is right now in the USA. Down there it doesn't make sense to buy a 3 to 5 year old car as you can get the same car brand new and still under warranty for practically the same price. So if you want a car, you get one either brand new or one that's 10 or 15 years old or older with a ton of miles on it.
Of course on the other hand the culture is different down there in that personal transportation rarely is as necessary as it is in the USA. So a person can have a 15-year-old car with 200,000 miles on it that cost them some $5,000 USA and if it breaks down that person just takes the bus.
