Series wound motors are huge for the power developed at Zero rpm. That limits them to rpm under 5,000 otherwise they explode from centrifugal (centripedal?) Forces on the stator. Gears are to keep it low rpm

Induction motors suck at low rpm to use the vernacular, but due to the low diameter can turn at 10,000 plus rpm for an overall gearing gain and the windings can't explode as easily.
