Well its understandable to have a truck and not want truck fuel economy.
I was able to get as good or better fuel economy with my 1985 7.4L 3 speed with 4.11 rearend gears with, all engine mods, no aero dynamic mods. When I got it it was getting 6mpg in town, after mods I was getting 10 to 13 mpg in town and 16 to 18mpg on the highway.
There was room for more MPGs, using highway tires as it had AT tires, using more favorable gearing either an over drive transmission or numerically lower rear end gears like 3.73s, 3.42s, 3.21s or both and aero mods.
