All these mirrors hanging out everywhere are a newer thing, probably a great idea. Drivers lived for years without them, but poophowdy, does it make doing some tasks slick and easy and beats getting out to go look. People that don't get out to look typically had damage somewhere.
I woul guess if you time constrained, they beat the wasted fuel they consume if you can even see it in the data plot
