Im pretty sure the plane hit the ground a distance before hitting the Pentagon then momentum skipped it. If you watched BE Smart on PBS, it's darn difficult to accurately land a commercial airliner for a non experienced pilot. Hell, its impossible to even take a small private plane and land in the same place every time. Iirc, most trainees crash short a lot the first bunch of times and the Saudis involved were technically beginners.

The pentagon is hardened, it is on everyone's must hit list and the damage is consistant with taking a horizontal projectile broadsides including shrapnel damage to the courtyard and far walls.
