Artificial womb is part of the progression. Womb is fundamental, but the short 2nd is mom and dad. Once that can be replicated artificially in a useful way, things get very interesting.
Embryos have no known expiration date, meaning the time it takes to traverse the galaxy becomes somewhat trivial.
