As the others mentioned - in some parts of the USA there are very complicated systems of water rights that can be sold separately from the physical land. What that means is that most people do not "own" the rainwater that falls on their land and must let it run off naturally. It is illegal to store rainwater in any way.

We also sell minerals rights separately from land. That can come back to haunt people that find out they legally have to allow someone that owns the mineral rights under their property to drill an oil or gas well or mine under their house. A homeowner might end up with one of these next to their house
