I wasn't there so it is all conjecture.
But the way I get it, Soviets were amassing on the border on one side and Germany on the other. The Pole (I forget his title) was a saber-rattler.*

The German offensive forced the Soviets back behind the Ural Mountains. But then they stalled out. At the end of the war there was a considerable concern that they would roll all the way to the Atlantic.
