If you're like everyone else I know, you are also captive to history and habit.
I don't know how to break out [except total recluse] but as long as you're in the situation you might as well experiment. Hypnotize your mom.
You can call it persuasion and learn the techniques -- leading and pacing, the High Ground Maneuver, etc. If nothing else it will 'shake the box'.
