In a 2-stroke gasser, usually the intake goes through the crankcase, and later being transfered to the cylinders, so the oil is either pre-mixed to the fuel or injected separately, but it's always consumed along the fuel instead of recirculating.

Wasn't detroit diesel making a huffed 2 stroke engine for school busses? Think I drove such an animal for a school district and don't recall any oil capacity or useage issues or anything odd except it was bunches faster.
Diesel 2-strokes are a whole different animal, with a recirculating oil system, and the intake flow always being pressurized by a supercharger, as the air intake ports are on the lower portion of the cylinder sleeves. Some resort to exhaust valves on the cylinder head, while others have exhaust ports right above the intake ports. Not to mention opposite-piston engines with intake ports in one end and exhaust on another.
