I had a utility that I'd use when state of Oregon employees forgot their password. It would attempt to guess via dictionary first, and if it was a common password would take just a few seconds. Else, it would hash it out, and that could take hours.
Back then, a 16 year old kid (me) could just tell someone they are in IT, take thousands of dollars of computer equipment, and leave, with no ID. I would get a carton with $10k RAM modules and go about upgrading workstations. There was more of a trust society back then. A few ruin it for all. Then again, those few also create jobs for Mr. freebeard.
