Black fairly snug PVC plastic in direct sunlight is very effective as a solarizing bio killer for any remnant weeds/roots still lurking. There are variables to it's effectiveness, time in place, amount and quantity of sun, etc but there are very few downsides and reemergence of not wanted growth is usually very far after new plantings have emerged, based on my experience.
