I am not aware of any voting system that does not have an audit trail of some sort in this country. Unsure what open source ultimately gets you in these systems, may a bit more trust? Don't matter what the code is, if it didn't get loaded.
Paper ballots used to fall off the transport truck in Chicago, somebody "found" a bunch of uncounted after the last election in a car trunk. No election in my memory lacked some anomalie casting doubt.
Kinda like paper dollars, you trust that they are worth something
