Most people just don't care. My mother for instance, after getting her first car with an automatic transmission, even though it had a sequential manual mode which could be useful on hilly roads, she didn't even care about it or how it can decrease brake wear while driving downhill. Not to mention the coupling of the automatic transmission to the engine is continuous, unlike a manual, so it may be even safer to use the sequential manual mode while driving downhill.
