So I have gone ahead with this mod, now my intake looks like this:

The intake path is now ~30cm, compared to the 150-200cm that snaked its way around behind the engine. This should reduce both restriction losses and intake air temperature.

BUT... The latter only when I isolate the filter from the engine bay. I plan to make some kind of barrier to wall it off from the hot engine bay, so it pulls air from the front left corner.

I had a chance to drive with it while monitoring IAT on the ScanGauge. Ambient temperature was +6C and IAT was 6-7C until the engine warmed up and the thermostat opened. Once hot coolant flooded the radiator the IAT quickly rose to 20-22C

So I won't see the benefits until I can feed it cold air.
