Door mounted much better for aero. I would look pictures of WRC car mirrors and their positions. Closer to driver in cars length wise is also better as air moves slower. You also have better visibility backwards as the mirror is closer.

a pillar corner design like used in tesla needs that your hoodline is higher than the leg part and still it creates more drag and noise than the door mounted position.

For my audi a2 project I first plan to install audi a1 mirrors. After that install my own design with same fixing pattern.
