I'm with your neighbor, TomEV. According to what I've seen on the different conversion sites, going with the fossil fuel on startup/shutdown wards off the issues of fuel gelling up in the lines when cold. It may be overkill, but I've thought of using my own homemade biodiesel for startup and shutdown, and running the WVO after things warm up.
An ideal-for-me setup would be to have a diesel pickup with the above adaptations for trips/hauling/pulling a trailer, and an electric car for the other 90% of the time.
