From what I've read, the effect from volcanoes is overall a cooling effect. But some suggest that volcanoes at times have lowered the Earth's temperature by half a degree in our life times. If there were ever a major eruption, or a large enough meteorite hitting the Earth, or an all out nuclear war, the end result would be a dark global winter that would last until all the dust and other Earth cooling particles fell out off the atmosphere.

The amount of greenhouse gasses that volcanoes emit is minuscule compared to what mankind is emitting.
