A good engine heater is pretty awesome during cold weather.

I lean toward higher wattage units because they can run for shorter periods and waste less energy to get the heat that is needed. I had a 1000W coolant line heater on an 85 Tercel that worked really well with it being parked outside. Set on a timer to kick on an hour before leaving the house, it could be a hard freeze and I would have heat the instant I started it up.
