IIRC you do still get electrical braking without a battery somehow.
Its in one of the videos on the Freegen hub.

As any ecomodder will tell you NOTHING is as efficient as freewheeling...
So ye; Freegen will add range to any like setup without the freewheel.

Then, if the electrical system 'lets out the magic smoke'; you can pedal it home without any 'cogging' drag' like any ol stock bicycle.

The other advantage is that the brakes continue to work and feel exactly as they always have.
ie:
If you fitted this to your grandma's dear old model T or whatever she would be none the wiser till the stopped to fill up.

Another advantage is that ALL the regen torque goes through the brake disk and calliper.
Axel torque in one direction then the other tends to loosen wheel nuts and generally cause problems.
