Peter Zeihan points out that GPUs are optimized to perform graphics calculations for gamers, and not to accelerate AI computation.
This misfit in design is what killed demand for GPUs in the crypto mining arena, as purpose built ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) were developed. Since ASICs are orders of magnitude more power efficient at mining crypto compared to a GPU, those using GPUs are losing money.
AI optimized ASICs are in development now, and Peter expects the first purpose built data centers to go online in 2027, with consumer availability toward the end of the decade. That's around when he predicts AI to start really start shaking things up.
Unrelated, Doomberg expects nations to develop digital currencies and get people to "voluntarily" adopt it by offering x number of "free credits". Once a tipping point is reached with adoption, the governments no longer consider its use to be optional.
