The main reason an EV is a viable vehicle option is because it's 90% efficient while a petrol one is ~25%. If petrol vehicles were 50% efficient, far fewer people would be interested in an EV. This is an example of how Jevons Paradox works.

Also, many people assume that if their car/appliance/LED light/etc. is more efficient, then they no longer need to pay attention to saving fuel/energy, because "the car/appliance will do it for them". So they end up using it more often and/or in a less efficient manner.
