All this talk of crank geometry and changing this-and-that brings back some unusual memories. In the very early 70s, NASCAR's Tiny Lund was featured at a Friday night Sportsman event in Raleigh, NC. His reason for running? A "flat crank" Chevy demo-racer. The full race-prepped Chevy sedan ran a small-block BowTie engine with a flat crank configuration...running like a large 4-cylinder engine (with their greater torque-making characteristics ) ... enabling completely different gear ratio requirements. Of course, the cam was relobed...as was the ignition sequence. And the sound! Like a giant 4 banger! Low RPMs, lots of torque, it was most impressive! And untouchable by the local boys....
