I'ts easy to fix by swapping wires but the instructions should be right.

I'll test the cord later to see if it's crossing over. I did come with my mac for using the fax function although I've never heard of one.
It IS a cross-cable. When it was made, one plug on one end was clip-up, and the other is clip-down.

Moreso seen on phone than on PC network cables. If you were to loot at the ends of your wire, with no twists in the wire, your ends might line up like this:

__---__ (text spacer) _______
|........| (text spacer) |........|
|........| (text spacer) |........|
-------- (text spacer) ---__---

Whereas other cables are:

__---__ (text spacer) __---__
|........| (text spacer) |........|
|........| (text spacer) |........|
-------- (text spacer) --------

Trust me, I've done this enough times making patch cables. If you accidentally flip the wire or the end to be crimped on over in your hands, Pin 1 becomes Pin 4....
