I don't think we're arguing about "better" here (at least I'm not), but about what particular set of qualities makes one car similar enough to another that someone can use a comparison between them to say a hybrid power train isn't worth the extra expense.

Just for an extreme example, I've sometimes argued that the best comparison to the Insight is a 911 Porsche. They're about the same size & shape, 2-seaters with MT, handle pretty well through curves, etc. The Porsche goes a bit faster (but I have gotten enough speeding tickets in my time), the Insight gets much better mpg. Otherwise, it seems like the main difference is the price: $20K vs IIRC upwards of $60K. So can we talk about that supposed "hybrid premium" again?

Same reasoning works with the Prius: you can find cars that match well in all the qualities that matter to me, but which cost more than twice as much.
