One similar solution to the same problem is the current trend to restore very early (50's and 60's) Corvettes into daily drivers. Not cheap, but in your case if you could find a late model caddy that's been wrecked hard, pick it up for $6k at auction, and retrofit the older 60's Fleetwood with the drivetrain, you might get what you're after.
The best part is the drivetrain, these retro-vette conversions I've seen all use modern EFI Corvette V8's w/trans that gets high 20's to low 30's FE and modern vette suspension under an early body. The car retains the early interior, lights, and character of the old cars, yet FE and reliability of a modern sportscar.
