MIT probably is a great place to study. I just did not want our friend to find out the hard way if that wasn't the case. Be careful, don't just assume its going to be great just based on glowing ratings and publicity. I have not heard any horror stories about MIT (or much of anything else). Most of the horror stories I have heard (or even experienced) involve particular advising professors rather than whole departments. As for my own story, since I was slow to develop as a consistently good student, I was lucky to be in a department that kept encouraging me rather than showing me the door.
