Actually, looking from the slope of the roof to the spoiler, I'd say the spoiler is actually causing a smaller wake, but it also looks as if the upward angle and how the spoiler wraps around the sides of the car causes the problems. More frontal area and maybe larger wake. I can't tell without confirming a fluid test or windtunnel test, but I'd say that it would depend.
If you made it from black, and your MR2 is that same color, than it wouldn't be so bad, if not, and it was white, you would run into some clashing problems
Look up akashik's (Spelling?) toyota truck with the rear fender skirts. they run so smoothly with the body that they almost look stock, and they blend in with his silver truck/black fender flares/trim truck.
