I found out some more about the guy that races the car.
His name is Dave Cloud, and he converts cars in the Seattle area.
Here is a site with a car that he converted.
What surprised me was this paragraph :

On a single battery charge, she covered
101.4 miles at 55 mph using lead acid golf cart batteries. "
