I know that my engine is a non-interference design, so I'm not too worried about hurting anything. The only part of the job that sounds like it will be difficult is getting the balancer pulley off.
As for the piece of mind thing, what's to stop a mechanic from screwing it up? Experienced does not necessarily mean good. I'd get more piece of mind from doing it myself.
