Just got back from Colorado, it's 2:30am, so the technical details will have to wait till I have some sleep:
Even with the back wheel covers and windshield wiper covers, I only managed 45.3mpg on the way up (Omaha to the Springs). On the way back, without windshield wiper covers, I almost got to 50: 49.7mpg! I know there is a vacuum leak, it does the inconsistent idle thing (vroom, vroom, vroom) and smells pretty rich as well. Also, the engine is freshly rebuilt, so I suppose it needs time to wear in the bearings and all... I will be searching for the vacuum/idle problem tomorrow.
While I was in Colorado Springs, a storm came up, I hit some ice, and now my front left wheel rim has a nasty dent in it. Anybody think I can save it? I am pretty handy with smoothing sheet metal, I just don't know if the metal will maintain it's strength.
Lastly, in switching out the tire (I had a full-size spare in the trunk!) I noticed my left CV-joint boot was trashed, and it had *way* too much play. I had heard it clicking before, but didn't make the connection till I saw it. It was making reasonable noise on a straight drive by the time I got home, so I will probably have to replace it before winter is over. Drat! I was hoping to wait on other repairs until it warmed up outside.
Pictures tomorrow/today!
