I like the Lexan "greendome."
My take:
Make up the "greendome" (whatever shape you like) with clear or opaque Lexan, cut out the lid, and glue back mounting blocks.
Use the Navy guy's method to make the mold and get a plastics fabricator to vacuum mold the piece on.
