Ha ha, yes this is true. One of the best homebrew ones I saw on another Prius were pizza pans. This aluminum perforated one is on my todo list :

From what others have said, the perforations should not make a difference. Anyway, I can tape/cover them as needed to create a balance between Aero and brake disk cooling.
