For $6,000, I assume you are looking at used. Have you looked at the space in the 2004-09 Prius?
When the 2010 hits our shores, the 2004-09 are going to go on 'fire sale' and even the used ones will take a hit. If you can find one in your price range, say a 2005, you'll have a pretty solid, hatchback with good performance. Best of all, there is a lot of engineering data around about how to keep them running happy.
I have a 2003, NHW11 and though it is a nice sedan, it is not a 'wagon'. There are things that could be done but I'd hold off on one of those unless you really want a 'project' car.
