I think you'd be fine with a Kammback that came down to the back end of the trunk. The angle would be a little steep, but not too bad. It would be easier to make, for sure.

Are those tires wide and sticky? They're hurting your mileage. Narrower (closer to stock) tires and low Rolling Resistance tires will help. Higher pressure will also help. I recommend the sidewall max (or more).
