wow... there did this thread go off too...

EFI was not introduced on North American model watercooled VWs until around 1988 or 89.... Otherwise they were Carbureted in the first 70s models and Mechanical CIS Injection there after (Except some Canada models). Some VW (and Audi) models kept Mechanical injection until the early 90s... namely a lot of n/a 4-Cyl and basically all 5-cyl models.
