We phoned the guy at the forklift breakers and he said that the motor on the broken machine he had lined up was the same unit as the gearbox, which had broken, and that the two were inseparable.
He was really helpful, and we're going next week to have a look round his yard to see what's lying around and get a feel for the sort of size the motors are. We figured that it would be less hassle (and cheaper) to just buy the motor for a fairly low price than to transport it home and then to a scrap yard, as we live quite a long way from anywhere that might have an electric fork lift breaking.
