One horrible commute (stop & go); two trips to Snoqualmie in high winds. Unplugged the Idle Air Control Valve, because my idle was too high most of the time (2000 at startup, 1200-1400 when warm). Now it idles down at 650-1000, and the deceleration fuel cut lasts all the way down to idle, so I don't have to use the kill switch as much. Five tanks in a row above 32mpg, it feels good! |

New spark plugs. Driving in a slightly higher RPM band under load, 2500-3500, instead of 1500-3000. Found a BSFC chart that shows pretty poor consumption below 2000 at full throttle, so I'm keeping the VAC above 10 there now. Also found that previous versions of my car had a vacuum switch that triggered enrichment at 5inHg, so I'm staying above 5 all the time.

Pumped the snow tires up to 44psi (was 33), pulled the A/C fuse so it won't run when I use the defogger (most days here in the soggy PNW), and pulled the trailer hitch - goodbye 27lbs of dead weight. Starting to try pulse & glide 50-60mph, instead of my usual 65mph all the time. Turns out you can coast for a while on I-5, lots of rolling hills. |
