Welp warmer weather is on the way! With current gas prices even purchasing sugar from the store, fermenting, and distilling it would be CHEAPER than a gallon of gas... even in my small garden (50ft x 20ft) I should be able to grow enough sugar beets to make 10 or so gallons per year with very little cost. |

Don't expect this one to be great... but those that follow should be much better. After the first 50 miles I changed the oil and transmission fluid. Since this car has never had its tranny fluid changed, and the engine has been severely neglected when it comes to proper oil changes, and good filter usage. I did a flush too which meant 20 mins of running the engine in the driveway. |

The weather is getting better, lower temperatures means better gas mileage. But I also think a bonus to this is the P&G test I did. High RPM's have a tendency to clean a dirty engine, and I think the week I had of driving the car with 5k+ RPM's and no exceptions was very good on the engine. At the time I was also running premium gas which no doubt aided in the cleaning process. |

First run with premium gas no real noticeable change... I've also been playing around with Pulse and Glide on the highway... it's too hard to do on regular streets I just drive easy around town. But on the highway it has been 100% throttle or neutral, no exceptions. I think it'll work out good in the end. |

Filled up on 91 octane gas this time hence the higher gas price. If this car responds well to it may become a trend though. Higher octane fuel has a great potential to increase gas mileage in the right car, just like ethanol increases gas mileage for the same reasons. So we're doing a 3 fill up test run of the higher octane fuel from here. |

Can changing your oil really help that much? I wasn't driving special at all, figured I'd probably get around 35-36mpg since we've been using the A/C and I got caught in rush hour traffic more than once... The only notable difference would be that I went from the 10W-40 oil with half a quart of stop leak and crappy Fram filters to synthetic 5W-20 oil with a higher flow better oil filter. I changed the head gasket seal, and a few other oil seals around the head in hopes of stopping the oil leak with the car... still plan on rebuilding the head completely, just don't have a spare head at the moment to port and polish to do a quick swap with this one. Not sure if the oil leak has cease, but it is looking promising. |

This was a baseline run. I wanted to see what my gas mileage is going the speed limit, using A/C, and accelerating at a normal rate. This was to tell me if it is even possible to get over my goal of 40mpg on driving technique alone.
Let me say that this was very inspirational knowing that the MPG of my vehicle changed by approx. 4mpg on driving technique alone lets me know that it is possible to jump past that 40mpg barrier with only driving technique, and soon with physical modifications to the car 50 or 60mpg may be in my near future. |

This was my first attempt at getting over 40mpg... as you can see it has not been a success... However the first fill up was during the day and it was 90+ degrees F outside... This last time I filled up at night and it was 71° outside, so I'm thinking that if I cheat and fill up when it is hot I'll make it. That's probably not going to happen, but the cooler gas fill up should help extend my range. |

My driving is mostly highway with short mixed city. Rush hour 3 days a week however as my wife has never obtained her drivers license I have to pick her up and don't have the option of leaving an hour early to miss the traffic as we have a 15 month old son and sitting in the lobby of a hospital with him is not my idea of fun. Rush hour adds about 20mins to the drive however I drive at a consistent 10mph after the initial stop occasionally shifting into neutral if I get too close to a stopped car in front of me coasting to a stop, or hopefully coasting until they move again. |
