Well, less than half an MPG off the 70mpg goal. I uave had to run the alt all the time. My deep cycle battery from Odyssey (Enersys) has prematurely died 1.5 to 3.5 years ahead of description. $230.00 for the battery, my third, and they are not even answering emails. Voltage drops to 10.xx volts ridiculously quickly, forcing the alternator to run hard all the time. So, ofcourse I have pirchased a new battery from another supplier (NorthStar) with the same technology--in fact NorthStar supplies Enersys.

First full tank with the wheel skirts back on, including the rebuilt one on the passenger side. Battery problems helped keep me under 70 mpg. Odyssey battery failing early. Using my new calibration multiplier of 1.076 instead of 1.09. I rotated tires and Google Maps and my GPS app both show a 7.6% undercount right with the tires currently on the front (different brand than those now on the back). These tires are not LRR either. They came with the rims and are in good shape so I have been running them.

After more than a year, I reattached the redesigned wheel well covers at the very end of this tank. I started more ambitiously hypermiling in the last 200 miles and scored about 72 miles per gallon, according to the ultragauge, in those last couple hundred miles. This next tank is intended to be a 70 MPG plus tank. With the return of the wheel well covers, I anticipate entering the 70 MPG Club without the need for quite as much hypermiling.

This is the lowest number I've had in possibly 7 years. I wasn't hypermiling very much, most importantly because I had to jury-rig a mount for the starter motor I replaced, I have kept the car idling at all stop lights and in traffic so as not to use the starter motor hardly at all if possible. But this number was so bad it reminded me that I have periodically lost the speedometer and odometer signals in recent months as if maybe the original gauge cluster is going out or the maybe there's an intermittent open in a wire somewhere. Even my ultragauge was wildly off this time. I was expecting 57 or 58 miles per gallon on the tank.

Still have not finished the wheel well skirt rebuild. It's also been very cold here, for California, and much more rain lately. Starter motor repair occurred late in the tank, and since the repair I haven't been turning the car off at any time during my commute unless I can bump start it. It runs great. The starter motor works great even though it only has the one full Bolt to hold it in. But I don't want to stress the mounting, so I let the car idle at stop lights and in traffic unless I have an opportunity to bump start.

But I steady cruise at 60mph on the freeway alot of the time now, since May when I installed the 15 inch 12 lb MINI Seven Hole rims (with my aero modification to them).

We had some of the coldest days I expect to see here in this Southern California semi-arid beach Zone. There was frost on the ground a few mornings at dawn. Halfway through this tank I reinstalled the warm air intake the brake assist vacuum canister expander and the ducting for my grill block opening into my cooling radiator. I have no idea if those mods contributed to this surprisingly low FE. But for a short while I had difficulty with the VSS signal. The speedometer wasn't working intermittently and so maybe that also affected the odometers calculation of distance.

Still no wheel well skirts. And I have made significant changes to hypemiling since spring: I coast down hills engine on in neutral for a full minute and a half at the start of my commute each way to warm the CAT and I also do much less engine off P&G on the freeway since adding 15" MINI wheels.

I have been work-focused and lazy about the car after all the repairs early in tue Spring/Summer. She running greatly, near 261,000 miles today. Original un-rebuilt engine, original clutch, flywheel, starter, alternator, catalytic converter... just quite solid. Honda builds the most durable engines.

Wheel well skirts were off during this entire tank. Also, much less engine off coasting than in the past. On freeway I mostly steady cruise. And I have been doing a longer downhill engine-on, neutral glide right at the start of my trips in my neighborhood. I used to do mostly engine off, with about 40 seconds engine on coasting to light the CAT, but I think that is not enough. I run it a minute and a half now, including some stand still idle, in order to light the CAT and get the downstream O2 sensor reading before I start typical hypermiling. Every trip starts this way now. My FE will suffer slightly, but the car will burn cleaner.

The distance-driven figure, as always, is calibrated with a 2.9% multiplier I identified using GPS a couple years ago. I have a non-standard wheel/tire combo that affects my odometer reading.

Car runs great. Twelve miles, thirty miles, 110 miles... totally reliable (so far). nearly 253,000 miles. Love it.

I think there is pump error in this. My UG read about 59.xx or something. Also... car/hypermile is partly disassembled these days... took rear diffuser off for muffler repair/replace. Tire pressure is a little lower than typical. My shift points are higher (revving to about 2200 and sometimes higher). Also, still running without WAI and without larger brake boost canister

Combining my car and my eBike (the miles that specifically replaced driving): if I add the 3.42 kwh used & the 86 miles biked and then recalculate FE, my "hybrid" got just under 74.833 MPGe.
---------
3.42kwh ÷ 32.78 kwh/gallon E10 gas = 0.104 gas equivalent gallons

647.961 miles car + 86 miles biked instead of car = 733.961

9.704 gallons gasoline + 0.104 gas equivalent = 9.808 gas-e

Only the miles are as recorded by my odometer, calibrated using my usual odometer calibration multiplier. I never go to the same pump twice anymore, so pump error could be playing here too.

Second new fuel pressure regulator seems to work fine. Lost a lot of mpg running the engine for fuel pressure test, also lost fuel out of the tester. Hypermiled the lat 85 miles HARD, stretching the tank as far as possible, and pulled 71.2 mpg on those last miles, saving the average. Why not? Fuel pressure normal. Compression test good. Have more maintaining to do (oil pan gasket replacement). Can never get time for mods! Shown miles is the calibrated OEM number. OEM odo showed 623.25 miles.

Bad fuel pressure regulator was dumping unmetered fuel intothe cylinders via the intake manifold for the whole tank, really badly at the end. Fixed it. And I actuallu think the fuel use was higher. I'm changing some attitudes about hypermiling. Also have a backlog of incomplete task and mods for the car. Dash OEM odo reading was 578.5 miles. Lost my kill-a-watt data. But electrical use must be higher since I keep a phone plugged-in all the time, as well as an iPod touch ("stereo unit") and occasionally my tablet.

Got to use my usual pump, but that means the pump was different again since i had to use a different one last time too. Ultraguge recorded 10.594 gallons used and the pump read 10.683 for a 0.089 variation, which is great, because it suggests that using the O2 sensor reading to know when I am in DFCO, instead of the instant FE reading, might be more precise. I'll need more data, using the same pump a few times in a row.

Either DFCO does not work on the DX Civic, or the shift points I have been experimenting with are counter productive. Ever since using DFCO extensively a few tanks ago my UG fuel use calibration has been off significantly. Even though I am using the same pump as before DFCO, the pump always shows more fuel used than the UG shows. Something is not right. At this time of year normally my FE is climbing.

ELECTRIC USE: 4.03kwh on the charger. 162.96 miles per kwh. This low kwh/mile number might reflect that I charged at work just before filling the tank. Normally I charge at home, which means I get gas, record the data, and then charge.

Late in this tank, I started using higher shift points, as high as 2700 in second, 2500 in third, and 2400 in 4th. I also extensively used DFCO throughout instead of engine off coasting and braking. DFCO was for engine cooling and power generation. I turned the alternator on only during DFCO. The result is the lowest reading on the charger I have ever had for a tank, and FE about the same or slightly lower over the last several tanks. The higher shift points might have been the reason for the FE drop, or not. Can't tell.

More low-rpm 35mph cruising for warm-up or power generation. More freeway for school drop-off ontime arrivals... and there you go! Lower than usual. On the plus side, a couple days ago I got a free of charge spot to plug-in at work. And so I moved my kill-a-watt in the car now, and the power I get at work is tracked as well as what I get at home, even though I don't actually pay for some of the power. knock on wood ...

I changed filling stations, seeking the cheapest price rather than pump predictability. My UG, which is well calibrated for my usual pump, said I used only 9.54 gallons, but the Costco pump said 9.916, so that is what I enter. And it is E10 gasoline (yuck) so I don't know if I'll go back, just because the price is $0.04 less than some of the other stations around.

The '93 CX transmission is working out well, though I still have to reinstall the splash guard, which I think will bring my IAT up to the levels I would have expected. I get to stay over 60mpg while driving much more on the freeway and more often at the speedlimits on the surface roads. But the weather is much warmer, and these are calibrated readings. OEM odometer's actual reading was 599.15 (multiplied by 1.055 to compensate for wheels/tires). Without calibration the FE would be 62.594 mpg. In reality my last log entries with the DX tranny should be calibrated too, since the VSS, speedo gears, and wheel/tires are the same. Turns out, my odo has been under counting distance for years.

First full tank with taller CX transmission. Weather is warmer, but I am driving a bit faster. More often on the freeway at 60+ mph to test and enjoy the taller gearing. My previous log entry probably an under-states FE because I went to a second click of the pump, refusing to believe the ~9.5 gallon reading on the pump since my UG said about 10.0 gallons. This time the UG reading was 10.078 gallons, so I calibrated the UG fuel measurement to match the pump. I also calibrated my distance reading. The stock ODO read 604.65 miles but using gps I have a multiplier of 1.055, which yields about 637.91. If at some point this calibration is proved incorrect, I'll change these entries. 1993 CX transmission installed at 410 miles. Throw-out bearing noise and ISB noise gone. But the loudest bearing noise I had turns out to be the hub bearing unit on front driver side. Also, I calibrated the actual odometer reading at fill-up (reading was 609.5). The purpose is to compensate for my larger than 1993 stock wheels/tires. I settled on a multiplier of 1.055 by comparing odo to a set route using ridewithgps.com. 410 miles + (199.5 miles * 1.055) = 620 miles. So I see improved FE over recent fills, but I am not sure the trans is the difference since I am still learning how to hypermile it. And the weather has been warmer. Pumping details: Harbor pump #3, 87 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click, but then went to a second click. Pump had read about 9.5 gallons but I didn't believe the number.

First half of tank I did more freeway miles again, along the worst part of my commute, due to time. During latter half I stayed off freeway generally and the daily FE numbers were higher. I recently changed the O2 sensors too (had a CEL). And my ignition timing is back to stock. Last year advancing ignition timing 2 degrees was associated with a 3mpg gain (don't know if it was the cause). I'm wondering about advancing again.Pumping: Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click.

I think this reading was a pumping error or miscalculation, and I'm stuck with it as my new high. Heavy hypermiling to compensate for smog test stationary engine revving. HOT weather! Not sure it helped, but with new battery and reinstalled 3" airdam I am able to drive at or near all posted speed limits (on average during P&G), including on the freeway. Several cold and rainy days in this tank. UG recorded 651.0 miles and 9.94 gallons for 65.5mpg. But the ODO/Pump calculation always has the last word.

Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. New Odyssey PC 1200 deep cycle battery installed at 200 miles, when tank average was 58mpg, due mostly to constantly running alternator trying to compensate for collapsing old battery. Last 100 miles was with airdam reinstalled. Only 7 miles DFCO (either engine on or off).

Harbor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. Changed tranny fluid to Royal Purple 5w30 on March 4. Staying off the freeways until airdam and wheel skirts reinstalled. Also, battery seems to be deteriorating quickly: twenty four miles engine-off DFCO for power generation just to make my 12 mile commute. I also have to keep the alternator on for at least half my miles, and the freeway is quickly becoming out of the question because I run engine-on when on the freeway. UG said I burned 10.0 gallons.

Habor pump #3, 89 octane, slowest fill rate, stopping at first click. UG said 60.0 mpg and 9.77 gallons. During engine-off DFCO, the UG loses miles relative to the ODO. UG said 586.9 miles. Plenty holding me back these days: battery seems weaker; plenty dark and chilly driving; no wheel skirts for the whole tank; and no airdam the last 100 miles. "Mystery Oil" mixed into the gas to clean fuel system. Staying off the freeways.

Harbor pump #3, slowest rate, first click, 89 Octane. The new VX wheels, near-new Michelin Harmonys, which I think are lower rolling resistance than my old UltraGT tires, and bigger wheel skirts appear maybe to have helped. But 64.02 mpg surprised me because my UG claimed 61.4 on the tank. I had toyed with its fuel consumption calibration thinking I was making it more accurate. I guess I need to rethink that calibration. Wheel skirts off.

Harbor pump #3. 89 octane fuel. The new ignition system is really helping. Driving fewer early mornings and refined acceleration technique for slightly better results. Driving more on freeways is fun and faster now because my aeromods really help me keep closer to the P&G MPG averages available through surface street routes. But the days are colder and that is pulling down my overall average.

But then I encountered more cool days, two rainy days (one very rainy), and much more dark morning/night driving. Until these "mishaps" I was seeing 67/68 mpg in the last 150 miles. Still, overall, I should have seen a decline in FE this time of year, and the next tank may be still another new high. UG read 64.6 mpg, 9.47 gallons, 611.6 miles.

3.99L/100km. What a heart breaker. I should have made about 60.7 mpg or higher. I had needed to recover from an 80 mile freeway trip that ended the tank and during which the airdam was partially separated without my knowing. I knew something was up, so drove more slowly and heavily hypermiled along secondary roads, limping to the gas station. I didn't guess I could have fixed the whole problem in 5 seconds at the side of the freeway. Ugh.

Drove faster on the freeway at times to see how speed effects the gauge readings at 60, 65, and 70 mph. My prototype tire spats MIGHT be a benefit at higher speeds. 90/223 miles were freeway.

This is not a real entry. It is just to represent the normal tank-to-tank combined cty/hwy average I tracked for years before finding this site. Beating the 2008 EPA standard by 3 mpg for 148,000 miles from 2001-2011 would mean about 425 gallons of gas. If I guesstimate $2.50/gal., I might have saved about $1060.00, but these estimates are so crude as to be kinda wild guesses, really.
