Still no oil burn. Still holding steady mpg numbers around 50. Pretty happy with it.
Engine seems louder now, more mechanical noise. I think it may be because I cleaned a lot of gunk out of my lifters. Maybe should have replaced those with new ones.
But a little extra valve train noise isn't the end of the world. |

Put car back on the road after the second light rebuild. Is much better now, as far as burning oil. No oil burn! New rings seems to have done the trick, plus the new valve set.
Mileage not as high as after first rebuild, but compression is better, and the new rings may account for that?
Doesn't matter, I can live with no oil use, and around 50 mpg at 55 mph on the commute! |

Car began running terribly again, so soon after the new valves too!
Tore down top end again, and found two badly burned valves. Car was only running on one cylinder really on the last day.
Put in new valves, valve guides, piston rings, honed cylinders. |

Was driving mostly 55 - 60 mph on this tankful. And mpg has dipped a little bit. So next tank I'm aiming for 50 mph avg on the out of town bits. See if I can't get it back up above 60 mpg again.
Still burning oil. @ 12.99 for a 5 qt jug of 10w-30, it's still not bad. But I'll have to tear into the engine again, and this time do it all right. When I have the $$. |

Have been driving 45 - 50 mph on the daily commute to work on US-23, from Au Gres, to Oscoda, MI. Nice flat road for the most part.
Very pleased with the mpg after rebuild.
Less pleased that I'm burning almost a quart of oil every day now. (
It's blowing smoke on acceleration, so I'm told it's likely piston rings. Either they've been bad for awhile, or I dropped something in the cylinders when I did the head. Crap. |
