As I suspected on the last fill, the fuel offset last tank was a fluke. I ended up with 52 tank MPG indicated on the ScanGauge, but had to correct it down to 48 MPG when I filled up.
From now on I will probably just leave the fuel calibration alone. I would rather have it report worse than what I'm actually getting.
So close to 50 mpg tanks! |

First tank with power steering removed. What an improvement! I think this number is a bit high, though. My ScanGauge has been pretty accurate the last 2 fills, but for this fill it showed I used 0.8 gallons more than I filled. So this number could actually be a little less, like 49. Won't really know how much effect the PS removal has until I run through a few more tanks. |

First tank with tires pumped up to 60 PSI from 45 PSI. While this tank didn't exceed my previous maximum, I believe the 60 PSI is helping. This last week has been very hot and humid, unlike the record tank I set at 45 PSI. Hotter = more A/C = less MPG. I am hoping the average for the next few tanks yields higher FE than the previous 5 tanks at 45 PSI. |

This tank included about 100 miles of faster driving at about 65-70 mph. Also, I had the EGR system connected again to see the effects. It appears my assumption was right, the ScanGauge was simply calculating low MPG values with the EGR system working, compared with it not connected.
Initially when I first hooked it up I saw my instant MPG numbers plummet, which is why I wanted a full tank test to confirm. Even though this tank is lower than the last couple tanks, I blame the 100 miles of faster driving. I'll continue with the EGR connected to see if I can get back to normal. |

About 75 miles of this tank was in a lot of rain. It took a lot more gas to overcome the resistance of the water on the road. I'm going to do one more tank with the tires at 45 PSI to see if I can go higher than 45 mpg. |

I thought for sure I would have 1-3 mpg better on this tank, but to my surprise, no improvement. For this tank I had my ScanGauge II installed for the first time. Although it is not calibrated yet, I can still use engine load, TPS, and the feedback from the instant MPG to improve my driving. Sure enough I tried to drive with load. I would roll off speed up hills to maintain a lower load and then regain speed down the hill.
After all that effort it seemed to not help at all. I'm back to just driving 55-60 mph and not worrying about load or hypermiling of any sort. I plan on starting some mods soon, and I need to get my EGR fixed to get my lean-burn back!! |

This tank was very mixed. For most of it I did not have my MPGunio installed. It quit on me. I believe one of the power wires shorted with something on the board because it blew my radio fuse, and now the MPGuino will not pick up VSS data. It still turns on and reads Gallons Per Hour (which tells me that injector lead is working) but no MPG data which leads me to a VSS problem. My speedo in the car still works.
Anyway, since I had no MPGuino I drove with and without hypermiling. For the last 200 miles I did 45-55 engine on P&G. This worked extremely well and is why I was able to reach a personal best 46.3 MPG on this tank. If I were to do engine on P&G the entire tank I would probably have hit 50 MPG, my ulitimate goal.
I will try to do all engine on P&G on the next tank and see where I am at. Its very hard without instrumentation though! |

Was a lot cooler this week. Around 60-65 degrees. Instead of using P&G I have resorted to using lean burn and driving with load. On one of my drives to work I was able to get 52 MPG on that trip. Thanks to the colder weather I had a lot of trouble staying in lean burn. Basically at night it would not go into lean burn because of the cold weather. Thats why this tank is less than my previous tanks.
I need to get the grill block installed and make some sort of warm air intake in order to be successful using DWL in this car. |

This is the first full tank since I put a brand new engine in. Still a D16Y5. I expect better results after a few thousand miles when its broken in. This is with no hypermiling driving at 60 mph with A/C on about 35% of those miles. |

At this point, my engine is limping around. The #2 cylinder is only at about 25 PSI compared to over 140 PSI on the other cylinders. This is due to bad piston rings and possibly damaged cylinder walls. The replacement engine is on its way and should be installed within the next couple of weeks.
But hey, 32 MPG from a bad engine that can no longer enter lean-burn mode is pretty good! I can't believe its still running with one of the cylinders that bad. |
