Back to decent weather! My battery is dying though. It doesn't have much capacity left, and if it recalibrates low into a forced charge, that sets off a p1449 (basically a hot battery). I have learned to drive without assist for more than about 5 seconds at a time. I just paid her off, so I think a new battery is coming.

I HAAAAATE this winter! Snow tires and cold weather forced the car into battery heating mode. It kills mileage.

Winter with winter tires on front. Ugh! I had no other choice on the tires. Every other tire in my size was unavailable and my OEMs were bald.

JUST missed another 75 mpg tank. I had a forced recharge and city driving doomed me at the end. My battery is on borrowed time. I am not getting IMA codes due to grid charging/balancing, but its capacity is way down. I need to replace my EGR valve and I need to install MIMA, preferably before I leave on vacation.

Learning to let off the gas to kill the lean burn purge has been a big help. Next I need to install MIMA and clean and/or replace the EGR valve.

Still premium fuel. I may be headed for worse mileage, but I am hoping good weather will offset it. My tires are about wore out, and the Re92, if I can find them, have a break in period for truly good mileage. Still, good tank.

Still using premium. Even if it is the placebo affect, I am getting a mileage improvement big enough to justify the cost. My theory is that cold weather cost my Insight some spark timing, and high test gives it back. I imagine the advantage will go away as it warms up.

Maybe it is just the placebo effect, but 93 octane has helped me considerably. I theorize that greater knock resistance lets the Insight run in lean burn at a load that would drop out of lean burn on 87 octane. 22:1 is way better than 14.3:1, even with the greater throttle opening needed. I think this helps the Insight much more than the hybrid drivetrain. If so, it is enough of a gain to justify the cost.

Bought premium for next tank out of curiosity after reading an insightcentral.net thread. I don't expect much in the way of improvements, but I thought I could at least watch the timing advance and AFR to see if I could notice any change. It is amazing how much difference winter and summer make in this car. I see about a 12 mpg difference. I rarely use the HVAC either time.

Winter sucks! I fight to stay over 60mpg, whereas 70 was a bad tank during the summer. My bettery still functions and doesn't throw codes, but it isn't putting as much amperage out as it used to. I know this thanks to my newly installed OBDII C&C, a Scangauge type device that also tells you what the hybrid system is doing.

I'm afraid I am on a downslope for FE until next spring. The cold weather is making it harder to get the mid 70's. I have numerous mods on the way and/or ready to install, including manual control of the hybrid system (or MIMA for us Insight guys), a block heater, and a dumb charger for my NiMh battery made from some 90v, 300maH LED light power sources. Many thanks to the minds at insight central forum.

I may start just subtracting 1 mpg from my readout. Every tank since I bought the car has been 1 mpg optimistic except for one 0.7 that may have been my error. If it's that consistent, it will save me the trouble of calculating it. Still, gotta love summer mileage!
