Owner: groar
megane: 1997 renault megane classic

Curb weight: 2491 lbs
Coefficient of drag: 0.31
Frontal area: 21.4 sq.ft.
Instrumentation:
Description: shared car between wife and husband... my car since 2008/11
1.9dT (turbo)
95hp (68.5kW) at 4250rpm
17.6daN.m (18.3m.kg = 132ft.lbs) at 2000rpm
1130kg (2491lb) - 1.99mē (21.4sq.ft.)
CO2 : 178g/km (guestimated)

Goal reached in 2009 : CO2 emissions equivalent to a prius, ie 104g/km which correspond to 3.9l/100 (60mpg) for a diesel; or at least the last version of my car : 117g/km and 4.4l/100 (53mpg).
Next goal (at least summer 2010) : CO2 emissions equivalent to a prius III, ie 89g/km which correspond to 3.3l/100 (70mpg) for a diesel

Note : the FE is the old European test
. Urban : 33.6mpg (7.0l/100)
. 90km/h (55.92mph) : 51.1mpg (4.6l/100)
. 120km/h (74.56mph) : 37.3mpg (6.3l/100)
For EPACombined I use the average of Urban and 120km/h tests : 6.7l/100 (35.1mpg).

Note 2 : the factory installed efficiency instrumentation is only a trip odometer and a guessgauge :-(
Build Thread:
Current Mods: The nut between the wheels : always ongoing...
. unleading the right foot, ie under speed limits
. staying at steady speeds as much as possible
. moderate accelerations
. DWB (Driving Without Brakes)
. DFCO (Decelerating Fuel Cut Off, ie Engine Break),
replaced by NICE-On Coasting as my ECU may not
do DFCO
. NICE-On Coasting
. Pulse & glide

Tires :
. Conservatively "Over-inflate" tires to 3.0 bar (43.5 psi), then to 3.2 bar (46.3 psi), then to 3.5 bar (51 psi), then to 4.0 bar (58 psi) in summer, then down to 3.2 bar (46.3 psi) in winter.
Placard : 2.3 bar (33.5 psi / Renault), 2.4 bar (35 psi / Michelin).
Sidewall : 3.5 bar (51 psi).
. Replaced old front Michelin Energy by new Michelin Energy Saver
. New flat hubcaps with around 15% holes. If they don't save gas, they were cheap and I like them better.

Right mirror : folded
Radio antenna : folded

Aeromods, first version (cardboard and tape) :
. Lower grill block : done and taped. . Rear wheel skirts : done and taped.
. Front wheel moon disks : done and taped.
Removed both after 600km because incoming rains...
My guestimate is that these 600km were driven at 4.3l/100 (55mpg), previous tank at 4.9l/100 (48mpg).

Aeromods, current version (chloroplast and tape) :
. Lower grill block
. Upper grill block (in winter only)
. Rear wheel skirts
. Mini front wheel skirts (top and front sides)
. Front wheel deflectors (removed)
. Trunk extension and trunk cover
. Roof Extension
. Mini open tail (rear wheel skirts extensions)

Engine mods :
. oil from 10W40 to 5W40, then to 5W30.
. kill switch
. 50Ah lead battery replaced with a 70Ah AGM (oem for some German mild hybrid, ie stop&start)

Planned Mods: . side skirts
. wiper cover
. passenger mirror deletion (currently folded with a camera tapped on it)

------
Failed :
SGII - bought 2008/08/03 on scangauge.net (European WEB site).
It isn't compatible, despite some sites say Renault's diesel from 1997 are ISO and I verified the connectors correspond to ISO.
